![]() Utumno was far older than Angband and is implied to be the biggest superstructure ever built in Middle-Earth, but Angband seemed to have been Morgoth's main HQ for most of his career and Sauron was it's main custodian. I can't remember their name right off the top of my head. These fortresses were known as Utumno and Angband. Sauron was in charge there (at Angband) and he kept Angband nice. However, part of the Iron Mountains survived into the Third Age as the mountains in the North that the Misty Mts. Originally Melkor had his base in Utumno, establishing Angband as a secondary fortification. I've never heard that Utumno was removed from ME like Aman was, but the region around it was probably drowned at the end of either the First or Second Ages. Utumno itself was utterly destroyed at the end of the War of Wrath, which ended after the Elves had awakened at Cuiviénen, and after which Morgoth was dragged off to Mahanaxar to be tried and condemned to be imprisioned in the Halls of Mandos for three Ages of the Trees. The Silm says that Angband was placed where it was to give Morgoth advance warning of an invasion from Valinor, and it was manned by Sauron. The History of Utumno and Angband - Region Spotlight.
